While most children spend their school days focused on lessons and play, tens of thousands across California carry a far heavier burden — the uncertainty of where they’ll sleep each night.
At LifeMoves, we provide interim supportive housing throughout Silicon Valley, serving thousands of individuals and families each year. Children make up nearly one-fifth of our residents. We see the toll this instability takes every day — from elementary students nodding off in class to teens forced into adult responsibilities far too soon.
As the school year unfolds, it’s important to remember that roughly 4% of California’s students experience homelessness. The absence of safety and stability touches every part of their lives, shaping how they show up, learn, and connect in the classroom.
