When Katalina left her home in 2022, she made a courageous choice to step away from family conflict and take control of her future. With no safe place to go, she faced uncertainty while managing serious emotional and physical challenges—but she did not give up.
In April 2022, Katalina entered LifeMoves interim housing, where the environment initially felt overwhelming. Still, she committed herself to the work ahead. She prioritized her health, attending medical and dental appointments she had long gone without. She actively participated in therapy and neuropsychological assessments, learning how to better manage her mental health and regain balance. She stayed on top of medications and appointments, taking responsibility for her own stability, one day at a time.
As Katalina transitioned to the San Mateo County Navigation Center operated by LifeMoves, she chose connection. She joined shared meals, built friendships, and allowed herself to feel part of a community again. “The people here… we’re all family,” she shared— a sense of belonging that strengthened her resolve.
Determined to secure long-term stability, Katalina took meaningful steps toward permanent housing, ultimately moving into a licensed board and care home in East Palo Alto. As part of LifeMoves’ broader commitment to providing comprehensive, whole-person support, she received one-on-one emotional and practical guidance through a partnership with Hearts for Homelessness, whose trained volunteers help individuals transition to permanent housing, reduce isolation, and build routines for lasting independence.
Today, Katalina’s health is stable, her goals are clear, and she is preparing for her next milestone: moving into her own apartment. For the first time in years, she sees a future she is actively building—one filled with dignity, independence, and hope.
